James Edgar Owens Jr., affectionately known to his students as “Mr. O”, was a high school teacher and football coach who worked in the NYC school system for over 25 years as a special education math teacher. After graduating from Tuskegee University, James dedicated his life to enlightening the minds of youth and in service of his community.

​

James was a gentle giant whose pleasant personality and genuine heart made him the perfect mentor to his students and his passion as both as teacher and coach helped his students believe in their possibilities. 

​

James’ legacy will continue to live with the many students he encouraged and inspired over the many years and we hope those lessons will be passed along to those who follow.

Who is eligible?
*Graduating high school senior

*3.0 GPA or higher and planning to enroll in an accredited post-secondary college or university (Provide a copy of enrollment & high school transcripts)

*Must have demonstrated academic success and community involvement.
